The death toll from novel coronavirus has hit 5,500 in Bangladesh as of Saturday after the health authorities reported 23 more virus-related deaths in the past 24 hours.
Besides, 1,203 more infections from the coronavirus were registered during the period, raising the confirmed cases in the country to 377,073.
Of the new deceased, 15 are men and eight are women. Among the total dead, 4,237 or 77.04 percent are men while 1,263 or 22.96 percent are women.
The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) disclosed the information through a press release in the afternoon.
As per the press release, 1,453 more patients recuperated in the last 24 hours to take the total recoveries in the country to 291,365.
During the period, 10,673 samples were tested in 109 labs across the country. With this, a total of 2,061,528 samples have so far been tested in the country.
The positivity rate — an indicator of the prevalence of the disease — was recorded at 11.08 percent in the last hours while the overall positivity rate is 18.29 percent.
The recovery rate continued to rise in Bangladesh reaching 77.27 percent while the mortality rate is 1.46 percent, one of the lowest in the world.
On Friday, Bangladesh logged 17 deaths and 1,278 infections from coronavirus after testing 11,256 samples with a positivity rate of 11.35 percent.
Meanwhile, coronavirus continued to ravage the entire world affecting 357,085 people in different countries in the last 24 hours till 10am on Saturday.
In total, confirmed Covid-19 cases have reached 37,110,989 around the globe, according to tracking website Worldometer.
Besides, the death toll from the highly contagious virus has reached 1,072,712, including 5,856 recorded during the period.
Of the currently infected 8,141,247 patients, 7,951,538 are in mild condition while 68,386 are in serious or critical condition.
So far, 27,897,030, people have made recovery from the disease in different countries. Of them, 229,478 recuperated in the last 24 hours.
The US is the worst-hit country with highest cases and deaths in the world at 7,894,478 and 218,648 respectively while India has 2nd highest cases of 6,977,008 and third highest fatalities of 107,450 and Brazil has 2nd highest deaths of 149,692 and third highest cases of 5,057,190.
