Defender Gil converted the decisive spot-kick as Corinthians advanced to the Copa Libertadores quarterfinals on Tuesday with a 6-5 penalty shootout victory over Boca Juniors.
Following a goalless draw in the first leg in Sao Paulo, the score was again locked at 0-0 after 90 minutes at La Bombonera in Argentina’s capital.

In a successful night for Brazilian clubs, Atletico Mineiro and Athletico Paranaense also advanced to the last eight of South America’s premier club competition.
The former overcame Emelec 1-0 at home to secure a 2-1 aggregate win while Paranaense drew 1-1 at Libertad to prevail 3-2 overall.
