One person was killed and four others were injured as a private company-owned helicopter crashed in Ukhia upazila of Cox’s Bazar district on Friday morning.
Bangladesh cricket all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, however, escaped the deadly accident as the helicopter that dropped him at the helipad of Royal Tulip Hotel in Inani sea-beach area of Ukhia upazila crashed while it was returning to the capital carrying five persons, including its pilot.
The ill-fated man was identified as Shah Alam, 40, an accountant of Ogilvy Bangladesh, Superintendent of Police of Cox’s Bazar Shyamal Kumar Nath told The New Nation yesterday.
The deceased hailed from Rajapur Tetulia village in Kaliganj upazila of Satkhira district, the police super said.
Ogilvy Bangladesh is an advertising and brand communications agency with its office in city’s Mohakhali area.
Of the rest four, two injured persons were identified as helicopter staff Shariful Islam and its pilot Shafiqul Islam. They were rushed to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital.
Police and witnesses said a helicopter of Meghna Aviation Limited crashed at about 10.30am in Redu Khal estuary area adjacent to the Inani Sea-beach of Ukhia upazila as it lost its control after few minutes into its flight.
The helicopter flew Shakib to Tulip Sea Pearl Beach Resort, near Inani Sea-Beach where he was scheduled for a television commercial shoot. He is scheduled to return to Dhaka today (Saturday) after completing the commercial shoot.
“The helicopter landed Shakib at the resort at 9:30am and it took off with five persons, including its pilot, and crashed at about 10.30pm in Redu Khal estuary area. An accountant was killed and four others were injured in the helicopter crash,” the police official said.
Mohammad Arif, sub-inspector of Inani Police Camp, said the incident took place due to technical glitch while the helicopter was returning to the capital just after dropping national cricketer Shakib Al Hasan at the helipad of Royal Tulip Hotel in Inani.
“Fire fighters rushed to the spot and stopped the fuel leaking from the helicopter after the helicopter crashed. It plunged into shallow water but surfaced when the water receded during ebb tide,” he said.
Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan confirmed his safety and wellbeing when he spoke to Rabeed Imam, Media Manager of the Bangladesh Cricket Board.
“I am fine, but feel rather shocked at the news of the chopper crash,” Shakib was quoted as saying.
Meanwhile, country’s people got shock for the deadly accident but expressed their gratitude to Almighty Allah for the safely of Shakib Al Hasan.
Bangladesh National Cricket Team Test captain and star batsman Mushfiqur Rahim in his FB page says, “All thanks to Almighty Allah… this is what happens when you have blessings of 170 million people… just happy to hear Shakib is safe and sound. But, may Allah grant Jannat to the person who lost his life. Let’s pray for the departed soul…”
According to the official website of Meghna Aviation, the chopper is Robinson R66, a turbine-powered helicopter designed and built by Robinson Helicopter Company.
A six-member team, including officials of Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh and MAL, is now staying in the spot to investigate the incident.
