UNB, Dhaka :The Democratic Left Alliance will organize a national convention in Dhaka on May 23, demanding due equal share of water from 54 common rivers, including the Teesta. The national convention was called as part of its ongoing movement demanding due share of water from 54 common rivers, including the Teesta and establishing coordinated water management, said Abdus Sattar, coordinator of Democratic Left Alliance, at a press briefing in its Topkhana Road office on Wednesday. He informed that the convention will also protest against the ‘water aggression of India’ and what he said the subservient foreign policy of the Bangladesh government.”The government has failed to realize our demands due to its subservient foreign policy,” said Abdus Sattar. The convention will be attended by water experts from home and abroad, professionals, leaders of Democratic Left Alliance, affected farmers and fishermen inhabiting in the Teesta river area. The leader of the Democratic Left Alliance, comprising eight left parties, said the Teesta Barrage project has become inactive as India has been creating obstacles to the undisrupted flow of Teesta River. “We organized the Teesta Barrage road march successfully on April 8-10 when water flow of the Teesta was only 300-500 cusec,” he said.Sattar mentioned that later, the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) and Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (BSD) jointly organized the “Teesta March” and also the BNP held the “Teesta Long March” on the same issue. He said the flow of Teesta water increased to 2,000 cusec on Tuesday, which proved that India created obstacles at a number of places including Gojoldoba.
