Consumer Rights office realizes Tk 15cr fine so far

Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) realized Tk 15.30 crore as fine from various business establishments since inception of its operation in 2010.
The amount of money was collected from 20 thousand 379 business institutions on charge of violating Consumer Rights Protection Act 2009.
A statement uploaded in the directorate’s website on November 2 said that 494 complainant consumers got Tk 8.30 lakh of penalized money. The remaining taka had been deposited in the government treasury.
The office started its journey on April 6 in 2010. Their activities were limited at the beginning. But now they are conducting drives in various divisions, districts and upazilas. Till October 31 of 2016, they conducted drives in more than 72 thousand various business institutions.
Masum Arefin, Assistant Director of the Directorate, said that Consumer Rights Protection Act came into effect in 2009 to protect consumers’ rights. To get remedy, a consumer has to complain within a month.
Nizam Uddin Ahmed Minto, a resident of Banani, purchased a small bottle of Cock from ‘Food Republic’, a first-food shop in the 35 Kamal Ataturk Avenue, on September 29 in 2016. The owner of the shop realized Tk 49 for the cock though the price was written Tk 15 on the bottle.
After this incident, Nizam Uddin lodged a written complaint with the Consumer Right Protection office. He tagged the cash memo of the Food Republic with the complaint.
Consumer Rights Protection office summoned both sides on October 30 for hearing on the matter. After hearing, judge of the Consumer Rights Protection office penalized Food Republic Tk 10 thousands.
In another case, consumer Imdadul Huq complained against an mobile phone seller. He purchased an mobile phone form SI Telecom at Basundhara City. The seller ensured him that the mobile would be returned for any defect in six months.
Immediately after purchasing, troubles surfaced in the mobile set. Then Imdadul Huq went to return the mobile set. But the seller refused to take back. So, Imdadul complained to the consumer rights office.
Consumer Rights Protection office summoned both sides on October 30 for hearing on the matter. After hearing, Imdadul Huq got back his money in full which he paid as the price for the mobile phone.
In most cases, concerned directorate officers are trying to protect consumers’ right. But in many cases, fingers of complaints are rising against them. Penalized institutions complained that officers of the Directorate are abusing power. They are taking undue facilities from business institutions.
But the director of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection Manzur Morshed Chowdhury denied the allegation of abusing power. He said that they are penalizing various institutions as per law. ‘We are not acting contrary to the law’, he added.
