State Minister for Labour and Employment Mujibul Haque said construction work of a specialised hospital for labourers will begin soon at Chashara in Narayanganj.
“The Ministry of Labour and Employment is working to improve the working
environment for labours. Construction work of a specialized hospital for the
working people will begin soon,” he said this on Thursday while addressing a seminar at Jatiya Press Club in the city marking the May Day. The Ministry of Labour and Employment in association with Safety and Right Society (SRS), Karmajibi Nari and ActionAid Bangladesh organised the seminar titled, ‘Role of Labour and Employment Ministry in Ensuring Welfare for Working People and their Families’.
SRS executive director Md Sekender Ali Mina presented a keynote paper in the seminar while general secretary of Samajtantrik Sramik Front Rajekuzzaman Ratan and technical advisor of GIZ Feroze Alam took part as panel discussants.
Addressing the seminar, Mujibul said the government always stands by labours with its Bangladesh Labour Foundation (BLF) fund. From now, he said, no labour will remain helpless as the government, led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, is working sincerely to ensure the overall welfare of labours.
Noting that about Taka 283 crore has been deposited in the BLF fund and it is increasing every year, the state minister said it is possible to ensure the welfare of labours utilising the fund.
About Taka 76 crore has also been deposited in a central fund for the welfare of the workers employed in export-oriented industries, he said. Mujibul said proper initiatives will be taken to conduct the fund disbursement activities appropriately.
The fund is used for providing financial assistance to sick and unable workers, transporting bodies and funeral of those who die in accidents and helping their families, bearing treatment cost of sick workers, distributing scholarship among the children of workers and giving incentives in recognition of special skills, he said.
