The acquisition of land for construction of much-awaited 128.22km-long Dohazari to Gundhum via Cox’s Bazar railway line is expected to begin in January next.
Sources in the Bangladesh Railway (BR) said the Land Ministry has already approved the proposal of the land acquisition in this regard on November 17.
When contacted, General Manager (East) of BR M Moqbul Ahmed told journalists they have already submitted the land acquisition plan, land schedule and the government approval to the district administrations of Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar.
Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong Mesbahuddin Ahmed said the acquisition procedure is likely to kick-start in January next. He said his office has already received necessary documents for acquisition of land.

They completed the formalities of a total of 365 acres of land from two upazilas of the district. Earlier, the compensation was estimated at Tk 705 crore. Of the total, the estimated sum for Cox’s Bazar and Chittagong districts were Tk 314 crore and Tk 391 crore respectively. The current projection for compensation has skyrocketed to Tk 1300 crore. Meanwhile, Cox’s Bazar district administration has completed the survey and other formalities for acquiring a total of 1,000 acres of land from 41 mouzas of Chakaria, Ramu, Ukhiya and Cox’s Bazar Sadar upazilas while Chittagong district administration will acquire a total of 365 acres of land in Satkania and Lohagara upazilas of the district.
Bangladesh Railway (BR) needs to acquire a total of 1,336 acres of land in Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar for construction of the proposed rail track. For acquisition, BR will pay the aforementioned Tk 1,300 crore as compensation.
The Railway Ministry sources said the 128.22-km Dohazari-Cox’s Bazar rail line will be constructed with financial assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) that estimated the project cost between $1.2 billion and $1.5 billion for the project that stretches to the border with Myanmar.
ADB has promised to give loan amounting to $ 1 billion over the next three years for Dohazari-Cox’s Bazar railway line the construction work of which is likely to begin in July 2017. The project is expected to be completed by 2021. Railway sources said the ADB team has completed feasibility study on design and drawing of the project. The ADB initiated the study on November 11, 2012. The sources also said the BR had undertaken the project in 2000. Earlier, Canadian firm Canarail had conducted a feasibility study in 2001 only to see ADB rejecting the study.
