The long cherished construction of Karnaphuli Tunnel under Karnaphuli river is expected to begin from December next and the construction will be completed by 2020 . The long awaited dream of the Chitagong will be fulfilled after its construction.
This was disclosed by the Minister for communications & Bridges Obaidul Kader MP while addressing the representatives of different service providers relates to tunnel construction at BNS IshaKhan Training Block premises .
The minister said an estimated cost of Tk.8,500 cr will be spent for this construction . Out of the total budget, Chinese govt will provide Tk.5000 cr and Bangladesh govt will fund Tk.3,500 cr. , he said. He further disclosed that President of China and the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina jointly will lay foundation stone of the tunnel in November next.
The Minister said Karnaphuli tunnel is most important part for connecting the Asian Highway through Chittagong , so this tunnel is most essential. He said govt is very much committed to the demands of Chittagong.
The Minister also refuted the allegations of the leaders of Chittagong about the relocation of deep seaport from Moheskhali, Sonadia and it is impossible to bypass the Moheskhali deep sea port. He also sets example of Singapore where a number of sea port existing, similarly Bangladesh will have a number of seaports in future. Among others, Secretary of the Ministry of communication, Divisioanl commissioner of Citation , Additional Police commissioner of CMP, District police super and high govt officials were present on the occasion.
