The construction of the tribal houses, which were burnt in an arson attack on June 2, 2017, at Langadu Upazila of the district, began from Wednesday.
Former state minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs and Member of Awami League’s Central Committee Dipankar Talukder laid the foundation stone of the work.
He said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina donated Tk 9 crore to build 176 houses under “Ashrayan Project 2” at Tintila Village in the upazila.
Among others, Upazila Parishad Chairman Tofazzal Hossain, Zila Parishad Member Mohammad Janser Alam, and Headman Association General Secretary Karol Chakma also spoke.
Dipankar Talukdar said the then AL-led government had passed the Chittagong Hill Tracts Peace Accord on December 2, 1997 to establish permanent peace.
He alleged that a vested corner tried to create communal unrest between tribal and non-tribal people like the arson attack at Tintila Village.
It may be mentioned that following the murder of a Bengali motorbike rider and local Juba League leader Nurul Islam Nayan, local Bengali people attacked three tribal villages and burned over 200 houses and shops.
