Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj has expressed hopes of a consensus on Teesta river water sharing.
But she said it may take some time.
“We will carry West Bengal with us on the Teesta issue, like we did while negotiating the Land Boundary agreement,” Swaraj said. She said she was sure of an agreement on Teesta “that will be acceptable to Delhi, Dhaka and Kolkata.” “But that may take some time.
It may not happen as soon as some of us want it to happen.”
Swaraj said, the Indian government was examining Mamata Banerjee’s alternative proposal of giving Bangladesh enough water from four other North Bengal rivers like Torsha.
“We will examine the viability of that proposal,” she said.
The Indian government had earlier rejected Mamata’s proposal during Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to Delhi outright. Mamata has also made much noise about Bangladesh’s management of other common rivers that, she alleged, had caused erosion of banks and river pollution.
