Comprehensive efforts to enhance buffalo-milk production stressed

Speakers at a seminar said that comprehensive efforts are needed to enhance buffalo-milk production and consumption in the country They also said buffaloes contribute only 4% of the country’s total milk production, significantly lower than the production of other neighboring countries.
The highest in milk production and export, India and other two South Asian countries Nepal and Pakistan get 56%, 70% and 63% respectively of total milk production from buffaloes.
Speakers said these while addressing at a seminar recently at Krishibid Institution Bangladesh auditorium in the city.
State Minister for the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Ashraf Ali Khan Khasru was present at the programme as the chief guest. Dr. Md. Omar Faruque, Professor of the Animal Breeding and Genetics department under Animal Husbandry faculty of Bangladesh Agricultural University, presented the keynote speech.
Fisheries and Livestock Secretary Md. Raisul Alam Mondal, General Manager of Palli Karma Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) Dr. Sharif Ahmed Chowdhury also addressed among others at the seminar with Director General of the Department of Livestock Services (DLS) DR. Hiresh Ranjan Bhowmik in the chair. Buffalo milk contains less water, more total solids, more fat, slightly less lactose and more protein than cow’s milk.
It is a matter of regret that the present number of buffaloes in the country is around six lakh but once the number was 42 lakh, said the speakers.
