Comprehensive efforts for containing population growth stressed

Health experts at a stakeholders’ meeting have stressed comprehensive efforts to prevent child marriage, contain population growth, reduce maternal and neonatal deaths and ensure safe motherhood.
They put special emphasis on expanding family planning programme to every able couple through creating social awareness for containing population growth rate that has become inevitable in building a healthier nation and middle-income country.
The District Family Planning Department (DFPD) organised the meeting in the conference room of the Old Sadar Hospital on Wednesday with Deputy Director of the DFPD Dr Shafikul Islam in the chair.
Joint Secretary of the Family Planning Division under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Abdus Salam attended the meeting as the chief guest.
Civil Surgeon Dr Mozammel Hossain, District Education Officer Selina Begum, Assistant Director of the DFPD Shahadat Hossain, Sadar Upazila Family Planning Officer ATM Shamsul Huda and District Health Education Officer Mohammad Shahjahan addressed the meeting as the special guests.
Health and family planning officials, educationists, political leaders, socio-cultural activists, NGO executives, Imams, union parishad chairmen, family planning filed workers, civil society members and local journalists participated in the meeting.
The speakers narrated the field level success achieved in keeping family smaller through spreading the concept of smaller family, nutrition, safe motherhood and delivery adopting different short, medium and long- term and permanent family planning methods.
The speakers termed the present population growth rate as still higher and said development plans of the government might not be successful unless all able couples adopted short and long-term as well as permanent methods of family planning.
Highlighting various aspects of family planning, they stressed bringing more dynamism in family planning activities for greater national interest in the process of building a middle income and subsequently developed Bangladesh.
