Rustic, an NGO has been producing compost manure since 2004 by recycling garbage collecting from 10 thousands houses of Sonadanga residential area in Khulna city.
At least 4 to 5 metric tones fertilizer are being produced per day. In one side, Rustic is helping to clean the environment and on the other side, the NGO is earning a lot of money by selling fertilizer.
Rural Unfortunates Safety Talisman Illumination Cottage (RUSTIC) an NGO based in Khulna city has been working as an active partner in solid waste management (SWM) for the last 10 years with a view to promote a clean environment for improved quality of life of the city dwellers. Rustic has been conducting its activities with 46 persons at ward Nos. 16 to 18 in the city. The head office of Rustic is at sonadanga residential area in the city. Fertilizer is produced at it its factory located at Rajbandh Hogladanga area under Horintana thana of Khulna at Khulna Satkhira road.
Rustic activists collect waste from house to house daily and there after it is sent to the dumping point. After then compost is produced.
On a spot visit this correspondent talked to 3 city dwellers resided at ward Nos. 16 to 18. While talking to Mahmood, an MBA student and resident of 17 No. ward told this correspondent that they feel much better by giving their household wastes to the people of Rustic in exchange of TK. 50 per month. Another housewife Sheuly Mollick, resident of 18 No. ward told that she had been giving her household waste to Rustic for 6 months in exchange of Tk. 4 per month and she feel easy in respect of giving waste.
An inhabitant and also the care taker of a house at ward No. 16 Anisur Rahman said, all the families of several flats of the house have been giving house hold waste to rustic in exchange of Tk. 15 to 40. Adding as serving project of Rustic caretaker Anis appreciated its activities.
When this correspondent visited the compost plant site of Rustic, he found the recycling process of composting was performing. Garbage was piled there in.
This correspondent talked to the co-ordinator of the plant Abdus Sattar who told that their composting system is exceptional one.
Female worker Asma said, she is happy to work in the plant.
Executive director of (ED) Rustic Morol Noor Mohammad who awarded Ashoka fellow said, Rustic has established one composting plant on a plot of 47 decimal lands adjacent to one of the final garbage dumping grad of the city authority. This plant is operating as a revenue earning enterprise of Rustic, he added.
Executive director further said, Rustic is also working at Jessore Poura shava area.
Rustic has a Biogas Plant also, ED of Rustic added.
Rustic’s executive director again said, Rustic has been working for reducing environmental pollution.
