Complications in operating NCT ends, deal signed with Saif Power

After long procrastinations in operating the newly -constructed New Morring Container Terminal(NCT)of Chittagong Port , a deal was signed with private operator Saif Power Tec on Thursday .
According to deal, Saif Power will operate NCT Berth No. 4& 5 . Chairman of CP Rear Admiral Nizamuddin Ahmed and the Managing Director of Saif Power Tarafdar Md. Ruhul Amin signed the agreement in respective side.
After signing ceremony , Saif Power Managing Director told that the operational activities will begin very shortly .
Port sources said Saif Power submitted tender papers for these two operators to CPA on June 9 last and their tender was accepted in all respects of financial and technical sides declaring two others cancelled. Total 3 operators submitted their bid for two berths of NCT.
 Sources said Saif Power quoted Tk.49.64 crores for operating these two terminals for 2 years in their tender bid. Sources further said Saif Power will working with joint collaboration of MH Chowdhury Ltd and A & J Traders as partners . A reliable sources said MH Chowdhury Ltd and A & J Traders owned by city Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin and Noalkhali legislator Ekramul Karim chowdhury respectively.
The construction work of the NCT was completed in December 2007 at a cost of Tk.469.90 cr including container yard space.
After 8 years of completion of NCT project, no private operators were engaged to run these 2 berths due to complications in engaging the operators.
 Mentionable that former city Mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury directly opposed the engagement of Saif Power in NCT operation during the period and several protest programs inside port and outside in city including largely attended public meeting at Laldighi organized demanding Saif Power Tec as persona non-grata in the port.
Port sources said this NCT terminal have capacity to handle huge quantities of containers more than the capacity of total CP terminals and Mongla port.
