Two police officials including Officer-in Charge [OC] of Rampura Police Station have been withdrawn for their alleged involvement in misappropriating about 165 gold bars, which were recovered by police after chasing a smuggler in the city.
The officials are OC Kripasindhu Bala and Inspector [OC Investigation] Nasim Ahmed.
Confirming the news, deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police said that the withdrawn police officials had been asked to join the DMP headquarters immediately.
Sources said the police Sub-Inspector Manjurul Alam on the night of March 13 intercepted a car at Balur Math near Rampura Bank Coloney. But the two passengers and the driver of the car fled away. The police then took the abandoned car to the Rampura Police Station.
Three days after the incident, on March 16, a man named Shahin went to Police Station and claimed there were some gold bars kept hidden inside the car. Police searched the car and recovered 70 gold bars from inside the car. Some police officials protested the story made by two top officials of Rampura police Station. According to them, SI Manjurul Alam recovered 235 gold bars on the spot after intercepting the car. He also informed the matter to the higher authorities including OCs.
But the OCs along with some officials showed only 70 gold bars in the seizure list. The rest 165 gold bars were distributed among them.
After breaking the news, senior DMP officials rushed to the police station and conducted an inquiry. Following the investigation, the DMP authority yesterday withdrew the officials.
