‘Community police helpful for prevention of crimes’

Community policing is a philosophy that helps traditional police force to address the causes of crime, fear of crime and community issues following the country’s constitution, HT Imam, Advisor (Political Affairs) to the Prime Minister said.
“Community police with the help of community people will identify the source of crimes in the society and help police forces to prevent crimes and solve problems,” he said as the chief guest at Bangladesh Police Auditorium at Rajarbagh.
Addressing a cover unveiling ceremony of the book ‘Police and Community with Concept of Community Policing’, he said community policing system was introduced various countries across the world and it contribute positive role in the society and helps traditional police to solve problems.
Additional Inspector General of Police (ADIGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque edited the book. The book would be used as a reference book, journal, academic book or practical for community policing.
Describing highlights of the book, Shahidul Hoque said various forms of community police and community policing system in developed countries have been highlighted in the book.
“I have written the book collecting the history of community policing, its activities, practices and various forms,” the author said.
In the book, he said, Community Policing is a modern concept of policing. It encourages the voluntary participation of the people in police jobs. In other worlds, the way of performing policing through police-community partnership strategy for effective crime control, crime prevention, maintaining order and dealing with other social issues is community policing.
The DIGP said the book has 11 chapters and five topics, which would help to make bridge between the police and the people.
State Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan spoke in the porgramme as the special guest, and said the government has amended and introduced police law considering Bangladesh’s aspects.
“Community police would aware police forces before committing crimes for solving problems and the book would help the community police to identify source of crime,” he said.
Chaired by Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Benzir Ahmed, the book unveiling ceremony was also addressed, by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Hasan Mahmood Khandker as the special guest.
High ups of police officials along with other personalities were joined the book publishing ceremony. AKM Shahidul Hoque also introduced Community policing in the country aimed at reducing crimes from the society.
ADIGP Moklesur Rahman also delivered his speech, while chairman of criminology department of Dhaka University Professor Dr Zia Rahman was present as the key discussant.
Publisher and owner of Khoshrose Kitab Mahal Mohiuddin Ahmad gave the address of welcome.
Dr Zia said community policing system mainly work to solve problems in the society, which is practiced in develop countries across the world.
“Community policing means community driven policing system. In other way, community policing is an organisation that works in a particular area to identify the problems within that area or community,” he said.
The IGP Hasan Mahmood Khandker said Police and community people are joint partners of community policing. Since long only the police were responsible to enforce law and prevent crimes in the society.
He said community policing has different dimensions and different definitions. The community policing, a strategy aimed at achieving more effective and efficient crime control, reduce fear of crime, provide services to people.
“Community policing is a partnership between the law enforcement agency and the community people of the society to solve problems,” the IGP said.
