Abu Sazzad :
The government is planning to form a banking commission for the state-owned commercial banks (SCBs) with a view to checking the financial irregularities and corruption effectively, said the banking sources.
The Commission will independently investigate the past as well as future financial irregularities and corruption of the banks. Members of the commissions will be picked up from the high officials of the Finance Ministry’s bank and Financial Division and experts. Actually, some vested groups like Hallmark, Bismillah Group have embezzled crores of taka from the state-owned banks, said economist and former adviser to the Caretaker Government Mirza Azizul Islam. “It is really surprising that the loan defaulters are moving in the society, as if nothing has happened”, he said. The government has already decided to provide subsidy to the state-owned banks to run their business smoothly, said the economist. In the current context, state-owned commercial banks have repeatedly failed to achieve their profit target, said Mirza Azizul Islam.
Bangladesh Bank Executive Director M Mahfuzur Rahman told The New Nation on Tuesday that the government would take all the decisions related to the financial movement of the SCBs , said the BB executive.
The monitoring team will investigate the financial activities, which would help reducing the corruption and irregularities in the banks. “It is very important to monitor the SCBs to avoid the future financial irregularities and forgery”, said BB official.
It is expected that the monitoring committee would play a vital role to investigate the credit risks as well as identify the internal problems of the SCBs. Actually, the recovery of classified loan of SCBs is very important to strengthen their credit portfolio. Already the central bank has installed large loan monitoring software, which has reduced the credit risks in the banking sector, said BB executive.
