Speakers at a roundtable discussion on Saturday emphasized combined efforts for ensuring successful implementation to attain the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Assistance and efforts of every single person is must to achieve the challenging SDGs, speakers said at a roundtable discussion titled ‘SDGs and Human Rights’ at East West Media Group Limited (EWMGL) conference room at Bashundhara residential area in the city.
They also raised the issue of economic disparity and asked all to come forward to reduce it.
The event was organised by National Human Rights Commission Bangladesh (NHRCB) and the daily newspaper the Daily Sun and moderated by NHRCB Chairman Kazi Reazul Hoque. Principal Coordinator of SDG affairs to the Prime Minister’s office M Abul Kalam Azad, Secretary of Women and Children Affirs Nasima Begum, Editor of The Daily Sun Enamul Hoque Chowdhury and country Director of the World Vision Bangladesh attended the event, among others.
Kazi Reazul Hoque said, “Constructive research on different areas is important to present the actual scenario of every sector. Research works on various sectors is going on but the government needs to be more conscious for the authenticity.”
“The government have to present the actual information to everyone so that people could know their right and demand for that,” he said. “Everyone has to be acknowledged the rights and opportunities for putting efforts to the society,” he added.
Emphasizing gender equality, M Abul Kalam Azad said, “It is not only a fundamental human right, but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world…Women’s equal access to education, health and representation in political and economic decision-making processes will fuel sustainable economies and benefit societies and humanity at large.”
He said, “The government employees are now deeply committed to their work, which would bring optimistic outcome to ensure people’s right and achieving SDGs.”
Issues like consumerism, sharing of knowledge, data analysis, role of NGOs, maternal mortality, attitude towards women, discrimination, poverty, climate change, environment-friendly industrialization, quality education, inclusiveness and equity came-up in the round-table discussion.
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) contains 17 goals, which reflects the scale and ambition of the global community seeking to realise human rights, gender equality and empowerment of all.
The SDG agenda is a plan of action for the people, planet and collective prosperity by seeking to strengthen global peace and larger freedom, and eradicating poverty in all its forms and dimensions. The five Ps of this development agenda revolve around: People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace and Partnership.
