Severe waterlogging again: College student dies lying areas submerged

Ever severe water-logging hits the port city yesterday just after two weeks and the city dwellers experienced the worst sufferings yesterday.
 One college student named Nazrul Islam of Chittagong Mohsin College died of electrocution while switching the electric light in waterlogged room at Kapasgola area in city yesterday afternoon.
 ASI of Chittagong Medical college Hospital S Talukder confirmed the death of the student. Nazrul was admitted in hospital with critical condition of electrocution where the attending physicians declared him dead. In early hours of Friday last, hillslide kills five of same family at Sitakunda Upazila following the incessant rant.
Hillside also feared in different pockets of the city where local administration is evacuating the hilly residents.
Civic life of the port city paralysed following the 6 days incessant rain accompanied with the high sea tide. The low lying areas of the port city including ground floors of the buildings, shops and business houses badly damaged by the rain water accompanied with high tide of the sea.most of the areas inundated with waist deep to chest deep water in the city and plying of city buses, public transports except paddle run rickshaws remained stranded in the submerged areas. The whole sale market of rice, flour, wheat, sugar in Khatungonj and chaktai areas badly damaged as the major godowns of these commodities are in the ground floor.
Secretary of the trade body of main business hub -Khatungong Trade and Industries Association Syed Sager Ahmed told the New Nation that commodities about Tk.100 crores damaged by flash and tidal water yesterday.
Chitttagong Metrological Department sources said the monsoon rain with the impact of depression in Bay, heavy downpour occurred. Sources said in last 24 hours rain, weather office recorded 169 milimeter rains. Patenga met office sources said rain may continue for more two days. Local sources said one third areas of the city have been inundated which creates miseries among the city dwellers. The shanties of the low lying areas washed away by the heavy current of water and the slum dwellers could not imagine about heavy flow of water at very early morning.
It is learnt from different sources said Kapagola, Badurtala, Rahattarpool, Kalamiah bazaar, Mohra, Halishahar, Pantenga, Bandar, Agrabad, Chaktai, Khatungonj, Chowkbazar, Nasirabad were submerged.
The badly affected persons are grocery shop owners, vegetable venders, and floating commodity venders and the slum area people. Due to holiday on Friday, the school students and their guardians some how relieved from miseries taking their children. The speed of the rain became fast on Sunday and Monday rather dizzling on Friday night but from morning yesterday, heavy rain is pouring. Both side of chaktai khal flowing through out the Bakalia area also inundated both banks of the khal yesterday noon during tide hour of the sea. The construction work of the retaining wall of the chaktai khal hampered badly and before the dredging the khal, downpour begins.
Different local sources said if the canals and drains are properly dredged before the rainy seasons, this type of miseries could not be effected to the city dwellers and blamed the city corporation management for this undesired miseries. On the other hand, the prices of the vegetables, essential commodities gone up instantly in the kitchen markets following the damage of commodities. The unscrupulous venders, whole salers and retainers are taking advantages of maximum benefits centring the sudden natural calamities.
District Agri Officer Aminul Hoque chowdhury told the New Nation that the major vegetable produces in Chandanaish, dohazari, Satkania, Banskhali, Sitakunda,Raozan , Rangunia , Fatikchari and the vegetable fields in these area damaged badly by incessant rain and hence the scarcity of vegetable will be witnessed this year.
According to market sources, the prices of common vegetable gone up bytk.20 per kg Conscious circles observed govt should provide commodity items like rice, wheat, flour, onion, garlick, sugar in the affected areas with fair price sale for certain period to relieve their miseries. Our Raozan correspondent sources said both thebank of Halda river over flowing with heavy flow of water from upstream resulting agri fields and houses of Hathazari and Raozan beside the Halda bank submerged. Our correspondent Mir Aslam told that the fish hatcheries of Hathazari and Raozan badly affected with water and most of the hatchery ponds over flown caused huge loss to the fish cultivators.
Meanwhile, City Mayor AJM Nasiruddin expressed deep sorrow over the sudden waterlogging in the city caused damaging of properties yesterday .
City Mayor in the morning afterheavy downpour visited different city areas including Bandar, Patenga, Agrabad and witnessed the miseries of the dwellers. He expressed shock over the sudden damage of household materials and damaging the shanties . A sources of chittagong Tax office said officials of Taxation circle-4 of Agrabad CDA area hired a boat for transportation to and from residence to office .Port sources said port acitivities largely hampered in outer berths and partially in inner berth. Lightering of consignment from mother vessels remained stranded in last few days due to rough sea.
Meanwhile power supply largely hampered in the city from noon . In chowkbazar area, the power supply snapped from 2 pm to 7.30 pm which created sufferings to the city dwellers specifically to media persons.
