The first day of BNP-led alliance’s 72-hour hartal passed off amid stray incidents in capital Dhaka and elsewhere across the country on Sunday.
At least five vehicles were torched and ten others vandalized during the hartal and ongoing blockade programmes while more than 30 people received injuries, police and local sources said.
A driver of Dhaka University (DU) operated bus of Baishakhi Paribahan received burn injuries when miscreants hurled at least two cocktails targeting the transport in the city’s Mirpur section-2 in the afternoon. The driver was identified as Yunus Ali, 45.
In city, Sharmin Akhter, 19, a college student, was injured in a cocktail explosion near Laxmibazar central market. Syharmin, a first year student of Government Kabi Nazrul College, is undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.
Police detained Ali Ashraf Mamum, joint secretary of Jagannath University unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), from the spot in this connection.

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) conducted a drive in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area in the capital ahead of the shutdown and arrested a man named Rajib, 28, along with nine crude bombs in the early hours of Sunday.
In Kawranbazar, at least seven persons received injuries when some hartal supporters blasted four cocktails in front of CA Building at around 12:20pm.
A man received burn injuries when miscreants exploded at least two crude bombs at Nababpur road in the evening. The injured man was identified as Delwar Hossain, 45.
In Sylhet, miscreants hurled five cocktails targeting Dhaka-bound ‘Jayantika Express’ train at the Railway Station of the district town in the morning. No one, however, was reportedly injured in the incident, said Station Manager Abdur Razzak.
In Joypurhat, at least seven persons were injured as two cocktails blasted at Muktomancha of the district town at around 5:15pm.
Meanwhile, police arrested a man along with six petrol bombs and five crude bombs near Baraiyar Hat area of Mirsarai upazila in Chittagong.
In Mymensingh, police shot and injured Nur Uz Zaman, a leader of Swechchhasebak Dal after the ancestral house of the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Raushon Ershad, came under a bomb attack in the district. In Gaibandha, at least seven vehicles, including two auto-rickshaws, were torched in Sundarganj upazila of the district in morning.
