Bangladesh-Myanmar Business Promotion Council (BMBPC) has laid emphasis on collective efforts to strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries.
It also suggested grabbing the enormous scope of cooperation between Bangladesh and Myanmar in agriculture, energy and service sectors including in the Banking sector.
The BMBPC made the observations at a reception ceremony arranged for the Myanmar delegation, who visited here for 8th Bangladesh Myanmar Joint Trade Commission meeting held on November 09-10, said a release.
Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Commerce of Myanmar Toe Aung Myint led the delegation.
Speaking on the occasion, BMBPC Chairman Syed Mahmudul Huq said: “Our two countries are not only close neighbours; but also countries with so many shared interests and stakes.”
“Bangladesh and Myanmar do not suffer from the burden of asymmetrical economic relations and any negatives. On the contrary, both our countries have almost identical economic challenges and long history of collaboration on myriad economic issues,” he said.
He mentioned that Bangladesh Shrimp and Fish Foundation and Myanmar Shrimp Association signed a MoU in June this year to work together to develop and adapt the hatchery technology in shrimp and prawn sectors of both the countries.
The BMBPC Chairman proposed to set up Special Economic Zones in Cox’s Bazar and Bandarban districts dedicated to joint ventures between Bangladesh and Myanmar, especially in the field of agro-based industries with inputs of raw materials from Myanmar for their re-export to third countries.
The Permanent Secretary Toe Aung Myint in his response assured all out support of the government of Myanmar to this end.
