Collaborative efforts for disaster mitigation stressed

Loss of lives and assets caused by natural disasters could be mitigated to a greater extent through collective efforts of all and better management.
Elderly people and children should be given priority in the activities and process of disaster reduction as they are more vulnerable to any disasters.
Speakers came up with the observation while addressing a post-rally discussion held at the conference hall of the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Office here on Thursday. District administration organised the discussion to mark the National Disaster Preparedness Day-2022 in association with various development organisations with the theme ‘The success of Mujib Barsha, swiftness in disaster preparedness’.
DC Abdul Jalil addressed the meeting as the chief guest with Additional DC Kolyan Chowdhury in the chair.
Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Sumon Chowdhury, Assistant Director of Fire Service and Civil Defense Didarul Alam, CCBVO Training Coordinator Nirabul Islam and Programme Officer of Caritas Bangladesh Faridul Islam also spoke.
The discussants observed that proper and effective uses of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) can help to reduce the loss of lives and property caused by natural disasters.
There is no scope of preventing occurrence of natural catastrophe but there is scope of reducing damage and other casualties through the best uses of modern technologies and communication.
They also put forward a set of recommendations related to reducing the risks and losses caused by the disasters.
DC Abdul Jalil highlighted the significance of the day and emphasized on good collaboration and coordination to mitigate the sufferings caused by natural disasters.
He stressed the need for a comprehensive approach for reducing the prevailing risks of natural disaster by creating mass awareness among people. Apart from this, a need-oriented and realistic plan should be formulated through a wide-ranging survey and importance should be given to timely implementation of the time-befitting programmes to face the risks as early as possible.
