Cold wave disrupts normal life in Rajshahi

Normal life in the city and its adjacent areas has been affected due to mild cold weather coupled with chilly wind and dense fog for the last couple of days.
The sufferings of daily wage earners like day labourers, rickshaw pullers and farm labourers have also mounted especially in the morning and evening.
Meanwhile, Local Met Office recorded the lowest temperature on 10.5 degrees Celsius in Rajshahi today. Yesterday’s minimum temperature was 9.8 degrees Celsius.
Mounting Cold spell with mild chilly wind and heavy fog has triggered cold-related diseases in this area.
The number of patients suffering from pneumonia, asthma and respiratory complications increased at the Upazila and district level hospitals, including Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, hospital sources said.
Assistant Professor Dr Belal Uddin of Pediatrics Department of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital informed that all three Pediatrics wards of the hospital are occupied by patients attacked with cold related diseases. Many patients took shelter on the floor of those wards.
He said a huge number of children, attacked with viral fever, ARTI (Acute Respiratory Tract Infection), Bronchitis, Pneumonia and Diarrhoea, are being admitted to the hospital. He also said malnourished and premature babies are particularly vulnerable to the cold related diseases.
Meanwhile, many elderly patients, attacked with Asthma, Bronchitis, Respiratory Infection, and cold allergies, are also being admitted to RMCH, Upazila health clinics and different private clinics in the district.
In addition to the sufferings of the people, particularly the poor, cultivation, especially wheat, potato, chilli and Irri-Boro rice and pisciculture is also being hampered due to weather.
