CMP bans sharp objects in Ashura processions

Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) Commissioner Iqbal Bahar on Monday urged adherents of Shia Islam to refrain from using sharp objects including knives and spears during the Ashura procession.
In addition, the CMP chief said night-time processions, fireworks and crackers would not be allowed and participants of any procession would not be able to carry along any bag, food container, pressure cooker or flammable materials.
The CMP commissioner disclosed the directives after holding a meeting at CMP headquarters regarding the upcoming holy Ashura with Shia Community leaders, CMP high officials and officers-in-charge of police stations in Chittagong city.
Referring to police headquarters and home ministry directives, Iqbal said, “No procession would be allowed after 6:00pm and police will escort the processions in the front and back.
Volunteers carrying their identity cards would be deployed at the processions and no one would be allowed to join a moving procession from outside, he said, adding that this year, ten Ashura processions are set to be brought out in the city while 400 police personnel will ensure security at the processions across the city.
Of the ten processions — three will be brought out from Khulshi, two from Halishahar, and one each from Bayezid, Akbar Shah, Bakalia, Panchlaish and Sadarghat, said sources.
