Staff Reporter :
It has become necessary to close the garment factories as well as the entrances of the outsiders in order to prevent the transmission of coronavirus in Savar upazila of Dhaka. Otherwise, the upazila health department thinks that coronavirus could take a terrible shape in this area.
Savar Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer and Member-Secretary of the upazila Coronavirus Prevention Committee, Sayemul Huda, recently sent a letter to the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) expressing his concern over the issue with request to close the garment factories as well as the entrances of the outsiders.
The Health Officer also sent the copy of the letter to the Prime Minister Office and to the Directorate General of Health Services.
The letter said, “Savar is a densely populated and industrial belt. This upazila is inhabited by about 50 lakh people, most of whom are garment workers. Due to this, the prevalence of coronavirus in Savar was less when the garment factories were closed. The patients’ sufferings from coronavirus have been increasing since the factories opened.” “Thousands of garment factory workers are being infected with the coronavirus because they stay side by side in the workplace. People from different levels are being infected through them. In this situation, in order to prevent the transmission of coronavirus in Savar, it is necessary to close the garment factories and close the upazila entrances,” also read the letter.
Sayemul Huda said, “Till April 22, only nine people were infected with coronavirus in Savar. In the last seven days since the factories opened, 14 people became infected. Two of them were attacked on Thursday.”
“The situation might deteriorate. So we have requested the higher authority take initiatives to close the garment factories,” he added.
