Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain on Sunday warned about posting or writing abusive and indecent comments on social media.
“Satire takes place even in the USA but those are not as indecent like the ones in our country. We have to keep in mind that the image of the country must get top priority. We are cautioning that we will not consider bail to those people who tarnish the country’s image by any manner,” he said.
The chief justice issued the caution while presiding over a three-member bench of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court that was hearing an appeal.
The state filed a leave to appeal petition challenging a HC order that granted bail to one Md Golam Sarwar, a resident from Sylhet, in a case filed under the Digital Security Act for posting “derogatory” comments on Facebook about some “distinguished persons”, said Deputy Attorney General Bishwajit Debnath.
He refused to state details about the comments and the names of the “distinguished persons”.
During the hearing, the SC also prohibited DAG Bishwajit from disclosing the names.
The apex court dismissed the state’s appeal and upheld the HC order that granted bail to Golam Sarwar on grounds of his cardiovascular disease, and that he has four stents in his heart.
