The unremitting heavy rainfall for last five consecutive days caused serious disruptions in civic life, port, fishing and business activities in Chittagong city.
The incessant heavy shower forced Shah Amanat International Airport to delay most of its flight operations since 7.30 am yesterday as its runway went underwater for a few hours, airport sources said. However, the flight operations in Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport were normal after 12 pm.
The heavy downpour accompanied by strong thunderbolt began Sunday and continued till filling of this report caused huge water logging and inundation of the dwelling houses of the low-lying areas.
District administration and local sources said the low lying areas of different upazilas in North and South Chittagong inundated with flash flood and heavy rainfall causes disruptions of communications in Ctg-Rangamati-Bandarban- Khagrachari and Co’xs Bazar highways .
A sources from Satkania said communications in Bandarban road snapped for the last two days due hill flown flash floods.
The coastal regions of Chittagong were also swept by a wind-driven surge by 3-5 feet above the normal tide, official sources said.
There was serious dislocation in normal public life, port activities as well as all sorts of business activities due to incessant rain that triggered heavy water logging in most parts of the city.
The loading and unloading of bulk-cargoes ships at the outer anchorage at the port were totally declined owing to heavy rain while operational activities in container handling suspended from Monday , port sources said.
Mahbub Rashid, director of Water transport cells said plying of lighter vessels remained suspended for the last four days due to rough weather and activities of loading and unloading from bulk cargo ships at the outer anchorage were totally hampered.
A total of 23 ships including four sugars and wheat laden ships are still awaiting at the outer anchorage for unloading of goods while nearly 50 sea bound lighter vessels remained stranded on shore for heavy rainfall, he added, Rashid added.
Patenga Meteorological office recorded 566,3 millimeters rainfall in last four days and 113.7 mm of rainfall alone in last 24 hours .
The Met office forecast further moderate to heavy rainfall in next twenty-four hours in Chittagong region. Heavy rainfall created water logging in many areas including Lalkhan Bazar, Pahartali, Bahaddarhat, Muradpur, Chandgaon, Shulakbahar, Bakalia, Patharghata, Asadganj, Korbaniganj, Chaktai, Nasirabad, Patantuli, Madarbari, Agrbad, Halishahar causing immense suffering to the people living in those localities. Witnesses said that many city areas went under knee-deep water during the rainfall and residences and business establishments in some low laying areas were submerged by rainwater. Transport problems in the heavy shower caused untold sufferings to the commuters.
Rickshaw pullers and three wheelers were seen demanding excess fare from the commuters taking advantages of the bad weather and thin traffic.
Meanwhile, congestion of vehicles in some important city streets including Muradpur, Bahaddarhat, Agrabad, Halishahar and Sholoshahar was seen as the heavy onrush of rainwater in those streets forced large number of mechanized and non-mechanized vehicles remained stranded that increased suffering of the commuters manifolds.
On the other hand bay fishing totally suspended for the last 5 days due inclement weather and rough sea. No fishing trawlers left the station to Bay during the period . Feringhee Bazaar fisheries market sources said the fish prices go up recently due to suspension of fishing in the Bay and its adjoining areas and coastal sides of Chittagong. All fishing trawlers remain stranded in the Karnaphuli river channel , sources said.
Meanwhile light to moderate rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind is likely to occur in Chittagong and Sylhet divisions as well as other parts of the country with moderately heavy to very heavy falls at places over country, said a met office release yesterday. The met office sources said the rainfall recorded in Chittagong 128 mm in last 24 hours.
