Money defalcation: Citycell CEO Mehboob held

A team of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Saturday arrested Mehboob Chowdhury, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of mobile phone operator Citycell at Shahjalal International Airport on his arrival from Sri Lanka.
Deputy Director of ACC’s Abdus Salam arrested him in connection with a case filed for embezzlement of bank money for Tk 383 crore.
Mehboob Chowdhury will be produced to the court today (Sunday), sources said.
The case was filed on Wednesday against 16 people with Banani Police Station. Those include: Chairman of Pacific Bangladesh Telecom Limited and former Minister M Murshed Khan and Citycell CEO Mehboob Chowdhury, on charge of embezzling bank money, ACC sources said.
Former Jatiya Party MP from Natore-1 Constituency M Abu Talha, former Commissioner of Mongla Customs House Md Nurul Islam and AB Bank’s Managing Director Moshiur Rahman Chowdhury are among the accused, he said.
The other accused are incumbent and ex-officials of the bank and Pacific Bangladesh Telecom Limited. Citycell is the brand name of the company.
 During its investigation, the ACC found that the bank officials had given an unconditional bank guarantee to PBTL (Citycell) upon their application, violating the bank rules.
Using the bank guarantee, PBTL availed huge amount of loan from eight different banks.
