Manzoor murder probe: CID granted 2 more months to submit report

A Dhaka court yesterday (Thursday) allowed about two months more for Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to further investigate into General Manzoor murder case and ordered them to submit the report on March 12.
Judge SM Saiful Islam of the Additional District and Sessions Judge’s Court-1 of Dhaka passed the order, following the plea of CID for more time. CID’s Special Superintendent of
Police (SP) and Investigation Officer (IO) of the case Abdul Kahhar Akanda filed the case.
The CID was scheduled to submit further investigation report on Thursday, but it failed to complete the enquiry. However, the main accused of the case HM Ershad, and also the Jatiya Party Chairman, did not appear to the court. But his lawyer Sheikh Sirajul Islam was present on his behalf.
Other two accused Major (retired) Kazi Emdadul Haque and Lieutenant Colonel (retired) Mostafa Kamaluddin Bhuiyan appeared to the court. As per High Court order, the trial proceedings of the case against Major General (retired) Abdul Latif and Lieutenant Colonel (retired) Shamsur Rahman Shams has remained postponed.
On February 10 last year, the verdict was scheduled to be pronounced but the newly appointed Judge Khandaker Hasan M Firoz in place of Judge Hosne Ara Akhter decided fresh hearing of the case and fixed February 27 as the next date.
Major General Manzoor was killed on June 1, 1981 in Chittagong Cantonment, just two days within the assassination of the then President Ziaur Rahman.
On February 28, 1995, after 14 years of the murder, deceased’s elder brother Advocate Abul Mansur Ahmed filed a murder case with Panchlaish Thana of the port city. So far judges were changed in the case for 22 times in the last 19 years.
