Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon yesterday said the government had taken initiatives to make the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) as a business hub for South and Southeast Asia using utmost potential of huge resources of the hilly region.
“The CHT, 10 percent of Bangladesh, is source of forestry, vegetables, fruits and raw materials of pharmaceuticals of the country. It has the potentials to become a business hub of this region,” he said while addressing a workshop in the capital. The minister said Chittagong Hill Tracts could be one of the major tourist destinations of the world for its natural beauty with hills, rivers, lakes and waterfalls. “The government is working to build the CHT as an international standard tourist zone,” he said. The Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs and International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) have jointly organised the workshop titled “Destination Management Plan” at a city hotel.
