China and India, two regional powers, will stand by Bangladesh over the Rohingya issue.
Envoys of these countries came up with the assurance in a meeting with high officials of Bangladesh foreign ministry, Foreign Secretary M Shahdul Haque told newsmen after a briefing of Asian diplomats on Monday.
“China and India are friendly nations. They always support us in any crisis. We hope that they will extent their support in resolving the Rohingya crisis,” he said adding, “We also need supports from global community to cope with the influx of Rohingya people.”
Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali led the briefing held at the State Guest House Padma in the afternoon.
Ambassadors, high commissioners and mission chiefs of China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Pakistan, among others, attended the briefing.
Meanwhile, the foreign diplomats stationed in Dhaka will visit refuge camps hosting Rohingya Muslims fleeing violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine
Foreign Ministry will arrange the visit to the bordering district of Cox’s Bazar on September 13. Over the last few decades, almost half a million Rohingya Muslims have been living in two registered camps and makeshift settlements in Cox’s Bazar, fleeing persecution and communal violence.
Myanmar does not recognise the Rohingya people as its citizens, neither has it responded to Bangladesh’s frequent calls to take back them.
More than 300,000 Rohingyas fled Rakhine and sought shelter in Bangladesh still recently since fresh violence erupted there.
