India and China are forcing the Bangladesh government to set-up coal-fired power plants, says Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB).
Chief of the graft watchdog Dr Iftekharuzzaman called upon “The government and the investors to “move away from the conspirators, especially India and China.”
He made the comment in a human-chain marking the ‘Global Climate Strike’ in front of National Press Club in Dhaka on Friday.
“They [India and China] have moved away from coal-fired power production in their own country and come to ours,” said the TIB chief.
“It’s a matter of embarrassment and regret that we are also going to contribute to the climate change despite being one of the worst victims,” he said, mentioning the ongoing construction of several coal-based power plants.
Iftekharuzzaaman suggested that the government give more emphasis on renewable energy generation and invest more in climate change projects considering wellbeing of the future generation.
He also urged the government to move away from establishment of coal-based power plants, which he termed as an “enemy at its own house”.
Commenting on climate issue, he said, “Through the coal-fired power plants we are contributing to climate change and it is extremely disturbing for us.” He called for all related projects to be shut down by 2020.
The carbon-emitting coal-fired power plants across the country are not in line with Bangladesh’s pledge of reducing the carbon footprint by 5 percent within 2030.
“We want the global leaders to acknowledge their fault and failure. Then, they should be more responsible and implement the commitments which they have made in several treaties,” said Iftekharuzzaman.
Several hundred youths, members of TIB’s Youth Engagement and Support (YES) groups, took part in the human chain carrying various placards and banners with messages of saving
the country and the planet at the programme.
The TIB chief said, “It is fact that human civilisation is now on the verge of destruction… The industrially developed countries are responsible for the misdeed.”
“We have to make sure that they cannot escape their responsibilities and implement their commitments properly,” he added.
To reduce adverse climate change impacts, the TIB executive director demanded reduction of carbon emission as per the commitments, wide use of renewable energy instead of fossil fuels, and provide adequate compensation to the affected countries properly.
