An abandoned newborn baby girl was found critically injured when a group of street dogs bit her beside premises of the old airport in the capital on Tuesday evening.
An 11-year-old boy Shabbir was playing football with his friends inside the airport premises. He suddenly heard loud cries. Following the sound, he and his friends came across a horrifying sight. They saw four or five dogs gathered around a newborn.
They first thought the dogs were fighting over a doll or food. But when they drove the dogs away, they found the wailing newborn.
Shabbir brought the baby home and his mother Jahanara Begum cut the umbilical cord of the newborn.
The newborn is now undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), said Abid Hossain Molla, Head of the Paediatric Department.
“The baby is in a critical condition with several bite marks in her nose, face and left hand. There is a fear of babies as she was attacked and bitten by street dogs,” the doctor said.
Shabir’s mother Jahanara took the baby Shyamoli Shishu Hospital and shifted her to the DMCH around 6:00pm, hospital sources said.
“The baby could have died if it was a little late. The dogs could have eaten her,” said Jahanara.
Krishna Biswas, a Sub-Inspector of Kafrul Police Station, said, “First we have to save the newborn. Then, we’ll find out who abandoned her and why.”
