Bagerhat court completes trial in 7 days: Child rapist gets life sentence

A Bagerhat court on Monday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for raping a child in Mongla upazila. The verdict was announced within seven working days of the incident.
District and Sessions Judge Md Noor-e- Alam of the Bagerhat Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-2 passed the verdict this afternoon.
The judge also fined the convict Abdul Mannan Sardar (53) Tk 20,000.
Abdul Mannan, a resident of the Ashrayan Project area of Makordon village in Mongla, raped a seven-year-old — who also lives in the shelter there — on October 3, reports our correspondent quoting information obtained by the court.
The child’s maternal uncle filed a case on the night of the incident following which police arrested Mannan.
The Judicial Court referred the case to the Bagerhat Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-2 on October 11. The tribunal took cognisance of the case that very day and framed charges the next day. Then on October 13, the testimonies of 16 plaintiffs and the next day, testimonies of witnesses, doctors, judicial magistrates,
members of the police and the investigating officer were taken.
On October 15, the accused was testified. The judge set the date for the verdict after hearing the arguments of both the parties on Sunday.
APP Ranjit Kumar Mandal said, “We are very happy with the verdict. It will set an example for perpetrators.”
The maternal uncle of the child has also expressed satisfaction with the verdict.
Meanwhile, the accused’s lawyer Liakat Hossain said that they will appeal against this verdict.
