Chicken and egg prices have increased in the port city as elsewhere in the upazila areas due to a fall in production, retailers sources said.
Chicken prices have shot up by Tk 20 on average and poultry chiken are being sold at Tk 160 per kg and egg prices have exceeded Tk 100 a dozen in span of a week in the retail markets.
In several kitchen markets, including Reazuddin bazaar, chowkbazar, Baddarhat and in posh super shops in the port city , it was found on Sunday and Monday that chicken eggs were selling at Tk 105 per dozen and duck eggs were priced at Tk 150 per dozen.
Buyers expressed their anger over the increased price hike of eggs. One of them, Abdul Hoque of chowkbazar , blamed manipulation behind the price hikes of eggs and chicken.
“For the last one month, I bought eggs at Tk 84 to 90 per dozen. Now egg price has been increased by Tk 15 per dozen. Even at the beginning of the winter, egg was sold at Tk 75 to Tk 80 per dozen,” said one buyer of Reazuddin Bazar.
Retail sellers claimed that low production affected the egg and chicken prices.Meanwhle the prices of local chicken, sonali species of chicken are being sold at Tk.380 and Tk.270 per kg respectively.
Earler in the end of February last, poultry chicken was sold at Tk.110 to 120 per kg in the kitchen markets.
