Chhattok people live in fear of Surma erosion

The river Surma, running in full spate, has taken a serious turn at Duyara upazila sadar that has already lost nearly 200 homesteads to erosion over the past one month. Homeless people of the desolate river island have taken shelter on the flood protection embankment and high lands.
They are living in bad condition for want of food and relief,
sources said. Currently, about 15,000 people of 4 unions of the upazila are directly affected by the erosion for losing their homesteads. Now, the upazila headquarters is only 300 metres away from the approaching river. Moglargown, Masimpur, Muradpur, Mazergown, Moingown, Horipur, Kanchanpur, Azompur, Jalalpur and Katakhalibazar among the worst affected villages. Hundreds of people have also been marooned and vast tracts of cultivated land inundated over the past one month in Mannargown and Duyara union by the water of tidal surge that entered through the collapsed flood protection embankment.  
Duyara Upazila Nirbahi Officer, said implementation of a project to check erosion is going on in the upazila under the town protection plan. He said more projects will be taken shortly to save people and properties of the upazila.
