Chevron opposes TU warns its workers against initiative

Chevron Bangladesh allegedly is opposing trade union and that is why has reportedly threatened the workers, who are taking initiative to form trade union, sources said.
The workers of the Gas Bloc No.13 and 14 of Chevron Limited on May 25 wrote to the Ministry of Labour and Employment that they were threatened by the officials of the company after they had applied for registration on May 18 for floating trade unions.
General Secretary of Workers and Employees Rahmat Ullah said, they have now legal authority of forming union. A Dhaka Court on May 20 asked Chevron Bangladesh
 Limited to inform within two weeks as to why the jobs of the workers and employees should not be made regular.
The workers complained that Chevron was trying to sack them ignoring the Labour Act. In these circumstances, workers have become united to form trade union.
The communication manager of Chevron told The New Nation that Chevron follows norms and regulations and support trade union.
The workers who were involved in development works are not permanent employees. Their jobs’ tenure depends on the continuation of the development work.
The Chevron is enjoying tax waiver facility in equipment import and corporate tax, but the oil giant deprives its employees of their shares, sources complained.
