Three world champions took titles on the last day of the YONEX All England Badminton Championships at the Barclaycard Arena, two of which featured thrilling comebacks.
Chen Long, the world number one, overcame a stiff challenge from Denmark’s Jan O Jorgensen in a battle of the top two seeds, winning his second final in three years by 15-21, 21-17, 21-15 in front of 6,000 fans in Birmingham.
“I believed that I could come back so I kept calm and didn’t rush the points,” said Chen, 26. “I played tighter and didn’t let in distractions.”
Jorgensen, aiming to become the first European to win the title since his compatriot Peter Gade 16 years ago, said: “He is so strong physically but I proved that I can play to my world ranking.”
Earlier, Carolina Marin of Spain staged the first of the day’s comebacks to win her first Superseries title as Saina Nehwal’s hopes of becoming India’s first woman winner were denied.
Nehwal threw away a 6-1 lead in the second before the Spaniard turned on the style to win 16-21, 21-14, 21.
“I was making too many easy mistakes and my hand was really nervous at the start, but then I just wanted to enjoy it,” said Marin after her 62-minute win.
China’s Zhang Nan and Zhao Yunlei beat three-time champions Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir of Indonesia 21-10, 21-10 to win the mixed doubles title.
China’s Bao Yixin and Tang Yuanting also won in two games against compatriots Wang Xialoi and Yu Yang 21-14, 21-14 over 39 minutes.
In the final match of the day, China attempted to win their fourth title of a riveting session of play.
