Defending champion Chelsea was drawn to play record-winner Real Madrid in the Champions League (CL) quarterfinals, while last year’s runner-up Manchester City will take on another Spanish powerhouse Atletico Madrid.
The winners of the two ties will face each other in the semifinals, which would lead to a rematch of the 2021 final or a Madrid derby.
German Bundesliga giant Bayern Munich and six-time winner Liverpool were placed in the bottom half while the Bavarians play Spanish side Villarreal and the Reds face Portugal’s Benfica.
The clash between the troubled title holder Chelsea with the Los Blancos is a repeat of last season’s semifinals, where Thomas Tuchel’s team advanced with a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge after a 1-1 tie at Madrid.
