Checks, balances to be maintained in case disposal: CJ

BSS, Dhaka :Chief Justice Surendra Kumer Sinha has said checks and balances would be maintained in speedy disposal of cases, now pending with both lower and upper courts of the country.”There are 2.7 million cases now pending with lower courts while the number is around 2.85 lakh with upper courts. The number of cases pending with the Supreme Court came down to around 10,000. We have already taken due steps for their speedy disposal,” he said.Justice Sinha said this while addressing as the chief guest the banquet session of the 28th Annual Convention of the Lions Clubs International, Multiple Disitrct-315 at a local hotel last night. Council Chairperson Lion M A Rashid Shah Samrat was in the chair.Past International Director(PID)of the Lions Clubs International Sheikh Kabir Hossain, PID Moslem Ali Khan, International Director Endorsee and FBCCI president Qazi Akramuddin Ahmed and Lions’ GMT area leader Nazmul Haque, among others, also addressed the function.Justice Sinha categorically said that any fear in the people’s mind about the judiciary is completely baseless. “There is no corruption in the judiciary,” he said adding, “our main aim is to ensure justice as well as fundamental and legal rights through establishing a speedy and effective case management system.”With these objectives in view, the Chief Justice said, arrangements for bringing an end to the camouflaging of cases side by side with direct recording of the statements of witnesses are being taken to the greater benefit of all concerned in cases.Justice Sinha also said that the Bangladesh Supreme Court has been doing its part for expeditious tax revenue collection in the country. “Revenue collection during the last three months’ movement was under heavy pressure. We have largely overcome it by now,” he said.He, however, urged for timely payment of taxes side by side with donating a part of income for social services. “We must also give proper stress upon building skilled workforce as we are lagging behind in this field compared to other countries of the world,” he said.
