Dhaka City police have asked house owners to check relevant papers before renting out flats to foreigners.
Deputy Commissioner Sheikh Nazmul Alam made the call on Friday after detaining 31 foreigners from Dhaka on various charges including overstaying.
They were held from Banasree, Gulshan and Uttara neighbourhoods in Thursday night raids.
At a media call, Alam said they were yet to get detailed information on the detainees.
Further investigations would reveal whether they were involved with any crimes other than overstaying, he added. Alam said they had seen instances
where many foreigners came to Bangladesh on student or tourist visas and rented flats in posh areas.
“They keep living in the country even after their visas expire, which is a serious offence.” Alam said there had been many complaints of these foreigners getting involved in criminal activities.
“The house owners have to be cautious so that the foreigners do not get involved in such activities. “Before renting flats documents of the foreigners must be examined,” he added.
