Chattogram woman set on fire for dowry

Amid concern over violence against women across the country, a housewife of Rangunia upazila in Chittagong recently faced barbaric torture allegedly by her husband for dowry.
Yasmin Akhter, 30, wife of Mohammad Salimullah Ruffel of Sandwippara in the upazila, suffered severe burn injuries as Salimullah allegedly set fire to her for dowry on Friday.
Mahbub Milky, officer-in-charge of Rangunia police station, said Md Salimullah, 35, son of Shafiqul Islam married Yasmin, daughter of Harunur Rashid of Rangunia upazila, eight years ago and he began torturing her ever since for dowry.
On Thursday, the couple, blessed with a five-year-old boy, had a fight over dowry and on Friday Salimullah poured petrol over Yasmin’s body and set her on fire, leaving her critically injured.
On information, police went to the spot, rescued the victim and took her to Chittagong Medical College and Hospital where doctors said she had suffered 40% burn injuries on her body.
Salimullah even didn’t let her go outside when she desperately tried to save herself.
Assistant Superintendent of (Chittagong) Police (ASP) Anwar Hossain uploaded a post over the horrific incident on Facebook which later went viral.Salimullah also rubbed off the charred skins of the victim, said the ASP in his Facebook post. He even made a phone call to the victim’s parents so that they could hear Yasmin screaming.
However, local people managed to catch Salimullah on Friday while trying to flee the village and handed him over to police.
