Charge-sheet accepted against Samrat in 2 cases

A Dhaka court yesterday accepted the charge sheet submitted against expelled Dhaka South Jubo League President Ismail Hossain Chowdhury Samrat in two cases filed under the Arms and Narcotics Control Acts.
Later, the court fixed November 30 for hearing on charge framing against the accused in the cases.
Judge KM Emrul Kayesh of the Special Tribunal-1 of Dhaka accepted the charge sheet in presence of Samrat at the courtroom on Tuesday.
On October 6 last year, Rapid Action Battalion, RAB-1 arrested Jubo League President Samrat and his accomplice Arman from Chauddagram Upazila of Cumilla,
following an executive order of the government, is sick and did not come out of her residence due to corona-virus pandemic. Therefore, the hearing should be adjourned, Advocate Zia Uddin, one of Khaleda Zia’s lawyers, said the media.
Meantime, one of the accused of the case former State Minister for Energy and BNP leader AKM Mosharraf Hossain died of corona-virus on October 17, his lawyer informed the court.
The judge, however, asked his lawyer to submit a death certificate to the court on the next scheduled date. Three accused, including Giausuddin Al Mamun, now in the prison, were present at the makeshift court of Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case on December 9, 2007, accusing Khaleda and several others of abusing power to award a gas exploration and extraction deal to Canadian company Niko when she was the Prime Minister between 2001 and 2006.
The anti-graft body ACC pressed charges against Khaleda Zia and 10 others in May 2008. Two months later the High Court stayed the proceedings of the case.
On June 18 of 2015, the High Court cleared the way for trial proceedings to resume the process and ordered the BNP Chief to surrender in the trial court within two months after a copy of the High Court verdict reached the sub-ordinate court.
Former Law Minister Moudud Ahmed, former acting Energy Secretary Khandaker Shahidul Islam and Kashem Sharif, Vice-President (South Asia) of Niko Resources Bangladesh Limited, are also accused in the case.
Three accused of the case former secretary Kamal Uddin Siddiqui, former General Manager of Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Limited (BAPEX) Meer Moinul Haque and Niko South Asia Affairs Vice-President Kashem Sharif are on the run.
