Charcoal emerges as new export item: Minister

State Minister for Textile and Jute Mirza Azam today said the government will take steps to solve the problems of the commercial manufacturers of activated charcoal as export of the activated charcoal has been increasing over the last few years.
“Activated charcoal produced from jute stick has emerged as a new export item. If its production is expanded, not only the charcoal traders but also the jute growers will be benefited,” Azam said during a meeting with manufacturers of activated charcoal at his ministry here.
He said the government is aware about the problems of the manufacturers of activated charcoal and all ministries and organizations concerned have been given necessary instruction to extend cooperation to this emerging sector. Move is under way to hold an inter-ministerial meeting for the development of the commercial manufacturing of activated charcoal.
During the meeting, the activated charcoal manufacturers urged the state minister to take steps to declare the activated charcoal industry as a rising sector and give 20 percent cash incentive as jute product. Highlighting the huge potential of the activated charcoal, they said it is possible to produce 2.50 lakh tons of activated charcoal by using jute stick every year and export value of this amount of activated charcoal is Tk 2500 crore.
About 12 manufacturers are producing activated charcoal from jute stick in the country since 2012 and charcoal was exported to China the same year. There is huge demand of activated charcoal in Japan, Brazil, Turkey, the United States, South Korea, Canada and Taiwan. Activated charcoal is used for producing face wash, ink of photocopier, water filter and other purposes.
