Changing mindset for implementation of disabled laws stressed

Participants of a day long workshop of policy forum about inclusion of persons with disabilities stressed on changing mindset for practical implementation of related laws and rules at different service providing institutions yesterday.
The programme styled as ‘Towards Inclusion: Ensuring education, health and livelihood opportunities for Persons with Disabilities’, was held at the auditorium of Bangladesh Development Society.
It was organised under ‘Access to Health and Education for All Children and Youth with Disabilities (AHEAD) in Bangladesh’ programme implemented by the International Centre for the Advancement of Community Based Rehabilitation (ICABR), Queen’s University, Canada in partnership with the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed(CRP) with funding provided by the Government of Canada.
Dr.Gazi Md. Saifuzzaman, deputy commissioner, Hosne Ara Begum, additional deputy commissioner Barisal, Elizabeth (Beth) Richan, project manager, Wahid Mursalin, education programme coordinator, Shahnewaz Khan Robin, Barisal-Khulna district coordinator of AHEAD, addressed the programme.
The programme divided in different interactive sessions and group discussions on ‘barriers to access and ensuring inclusion’, ‘commitments to build a better tomorrow’ was participated by government officials, stakeholders, journalists , representatives from different non-government and voluntary organisations.
They said that Bangladesh enacted a lot of laws related with providing services to persons with disabilities and introduced monthly allowances for them.
However mindset of the persons related with proper implementations of those laws and rules yet to be changed, they said.
Sharing experiences the participants told persons with disabilities still facing social and institutional obstacles from service providers in gettingaccess in education, health, communication sectors.
The members of the policy forum also stressed on providing updating data and coordination between organs of different sectors related with persons with disabilities for ensuring better services.
