UNB, Dhaka :
BNP senior leader Hafizuddin Ahmed on Monday asked his party men to get ready to make a supreme sacrifice on the streets for the restoration of democracy for bringing a change in power as there is no scope in the country now to do that through the ballot.
Speaking at a discussion meeting, the BNP leader also said the incidents of killing, repression and corruption are growing gradually for the prevailing culture of impunity. Bangladesh Youth Forum arranged the programme titled ‘BNP’s National Council and the Movement for Restoration of Democracy’ at the Jatiya Press Club.
“Now it’s clear that there’ll be no change in
power through the ballot in the country. The measure the government has taken through amending the constitution that now the people of Bangladesh will not get any chance for bringing change in power democratically,” he said.
Hafiz further said, “Now all the leaders and activists, including youths, will have to be there on the streets…we want democracy and an end to vote rigging. We’ll sacrifice our lives on the streets, if necessary, to make it happen under the leadership of our leader (Khaleda).”
Mentioning that their party’s movement is for the restoration of democracy and people’s voting rights, not going to power, he said, “We all will set an example by taking to the streets for the sake of the country.”
Hafiz, a BNP vice chairman, criticised the Election Commission for its inaction and subservient role, saying no fair election is possible under it.
About the stealing of Tk 800 crore from Bangladesh Bank’s reserve account, he said the names of those behind the heist are gradually surfacing. “We’ve first heard hackers looted the money. Now it was said some Bangladesh Bank officials are behind it. If the central bank officials are quizzed they might disclose the names of ruling party men involved in it.”
The BNP leader urged the government to make their names public and bring them to justice. “It’s very regrettable that the government is yet to make any clear statement in this regard.” He said plunderers are taking away money from different finical institutions and banks as there is no democracy in the country. “No one is being tried for plundering public money as government high-up are involved in all these incidents.”
“Now people are waiting to see a dynamic BNP leadership to be formed through its council who will fight for the restoration of democracy even putting their lives at stake,” Hafiz said.
