Centenary of Tagore’s visit to Sylhet begins amid festivity

Celebrations marking the hundred-year anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore’s visit to Sylhet kicked of yesterday in the city.
Tagore arrived on November 5, 1919, attended many programmes in the next three days and left on November 8.
Marking the Nobel Laureate’s stay, several programmes were held by different organisations at the places which Tagore visited and a formal committee was formed to organise the “Sylhet-e Rabindranath: Shatabarshe Smaran Utshab” from November 5-8.
The day began with a tribute at the historic Chandni Ghat of Surma river at 7am, where Tagore arrived in 1919.
Srihatta Brahma Samaj organised a dance and musical tribute followed by a procession and a musical event “Shabde Chhande Rabindra Smaran” at the Brahma Mandir in the city.
Later at 11am, Sylhet City Corporation brought out a grand procession from the Nagar Bhaban which walked some important routes of the city.
The festival committee unveiled a mural of Tagore at Chandni Ghat area in the afternoon and the festival was officially inaugurated by former finance minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith. A cultural event was organised there afterwards.
In the evening, Srihatta Brahma Samaj organised a discussion and cultural event at Kabi Nazrul Auditorium.
Sylhet City Mayor Ariful Haque Choudhury, member secretary of the organising committee, said, “This is an auspicious moment and we are very lucky to celebrate it.”
“We hope that people from all walks will join the celebration,” the mayor added.
