City dwellers will be granted exemption from paying interest levied on their arrears if they pay up the taxes by next month, said Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin on Saturday.
He said this while inaugurating a programme at Engr Abdul Khalek Compound in Anderkilla area of the port city at 11:30am. With an aim to suppressing militants, controlling drugs and creating awareness for paying taxes, CCC also brought out a procession.
Similar awareness programmes were organised in CCC’s 41 wards yesterday. Respective councillors, locals, students and teachers of CCC-run educational institutions took part in the events.
Paying municipal taxes is a civic duty, the mayor said, adding that there is no scope for spreading confusion in this regard.
CCC has no jurisdiction to fix municipal tax, he said, adding, CCC only implements the government directive.
Municipal tax has not been increased this time, Nasir claimed, adding that they were realising 17 percent tax like the previous years.
Contacted, Mostafizur Rahman, chief revenue officer of CCC, said if the people pay up the taxes by May 21, they will be exempted from paying interest levied on their arrears.
