The election wind in the port city of Chittagong is blowing ahead of coming city corporation election.
The intending candidates from two major political parties – Awami League and BNP are in the run of mayorship for next term.
Before declaration of election schedule , the internal publicity against the respective candidates are against the norms of the election manifesto despite of prohibition of election campaign through publication of posters, leaflets, banners etc, aspirants from both the parties are randomly advancing with publicity asking blessing from the city dwellers . District Election Commission sources said, the present publicity in favour of the respective publicity is totally unlawful.
District Election Officer Khorshed Alam told that the last mayor election was held on June 17, 2010 and the BNP nominee Manzoor Alam won landslide victory against the AL candidate ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury.
He said there is a existing rule for holding election before expiry of the present tenure of last elected body , as such EC earlier took initiatives to hold election either in April or May next.
Centering the announcement of the EC, the aspirants became more active for mass contacts in the different wards of the city for the last few months. Very recently, AL aspirants Mohiuddin Chowdhury, AZM Nasiruddin, Nurul Islam BSc paid courtesy call to prime Minister in the second week of this month .
On the other hand , CDA Chairman Abdus Salam is organizing ward-wise public relation programmes in the city aimed at contesting the forthcoming mayor election and the people from all walks of life are expecting him as a mayor candidate. As a Chairman of CDA , he has already earned reputation due to implementation of huge development works in the city including flyover , local elite said.
Meanwhile City BNP Secretary Dr. Shahdat Hossain, senior BNP leaders Abdullah Al Noman, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Mir Nasir are eager to contest in next mayor election, party sources said.
On the other hand , BNP backed present mayor Manzoor is also hopeful for contesting the polls.
While contacted City BNP Secretary Dr. Shahdat told this reporter , elderly senior leader Noman Bhai ‘Khasru Bhai and Nasir Bhai are not willing to contest in local body election .
He also blamed present BNP backed Mayor Manzoor Alam for perusing the AL lobby and as AL agent after elected as city Mayor which was not forgotten by BNP policy makers.
The candidate for mayorship from ruling Awami League is yet to be finalised but former Mayor Mohiuddin Chowdhury and the City Awami League General Secretary AZM Nasiruddin are confident about their nomination by the party high command and they are working for long time with a view to contesting in the city corporation
Both the leaders are continuously organising ward base mass contact programmes recently and the CDA Chairman Abdus Salam is also advancing ahead with election publicity.
Besides, the expelled leader of Jatiya Party Solaiman Alam Seth is also conducting election projection meeting in his locality aimed at next candidate for mayor election. No candidate from Jamaat is in the run of mayorship .
Mentionable that city Jamaat Ameer Moulana Shamsul Alam contested the mayorship in last two terms of election but now he in jail, sources said.
