CCC fails to mitigate water-logging despite spending Tk 200 cr

Watchdog of the city, Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) has spent about Tk.200 cr during last 4 years to mitigate the prevailing water-logging during rainy season.
 The renovations of drains, culverts, lifting of earth from the canal, drains are being continuing whole the year but on first torrential rains of the year on Sunday for about 8 hours , whole the city’s lowing lying areas and the thoroughfares of the city submerged in rain water .
 Only few hours incessant rain the situation of the city turned worst.
City Corporation sources said, in last four year, CCC procured drum truck, container mover, short excavator for renovations of the canals and drains.
 Sources said during the whole year, CCC was engaged with the lifting of earth from Chaktai canal, drain, re-excavation of canals , expansion of drains and culverts, and construction of retaining walls. It said during fiscal 2010-11, about Tk.50cr , in 2011-12 Tk.38.48 cr, in 2012-13 Tk.61.67 cr and in 2013-14 Tk.34.68 cr were spent respectively for this purpose to resolve the water-logging in the city.
Besides, under the finance of Bangladesh Municipal Development Fund and the Disaster Management Program project, CCC spent Tk.3 cr and Tk.25 cr respectively for this purpose, sources said.
Sources further said from January to April 10 of the current year, Engineering deptt of CCC engaged 18 excavator s for lifting earth from 18 canals where about 7 000 trips earth lifted.
